Pay for AI if you want actual progress

Free tiers are for trying the product. Frontier models, agent computer-use, and new SKUs like GPT-6 Astra Pro sit on paid plans. What the vendors actually gated in Sep 2026.

## what it does

tl;dr

If AI is how you ship work, pay. Free SKUs exist to acquire users. The models that just moved the frontier are behind subscriptions, usage caps, or admin flags. Staying on free and complaining the agent is dumb is a plan mismatch, not a model mismatch.

We did not A/B this in a sandbox. The gating below is from vendor pages fetched 6 Sep 2026.

What just happened (OpenAI)

GPT-6 Astra is the current OpenAI flagship. Live chatgpt.com/pricing (fetched this session) puts GPT-6 Astra on Plus and Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra on Pro, with Pro described as 5x or 20x more usage. Seat prices: Plus $20/mo; Pro $100/mo (5× Plus) or $200/mo (20× Plus).

ChatGPT surfaceUSDAstra
Free$0No — GPT-5.6 Luna / limited tools
Gopaid (ads possible)Not listed as Astra on the comparison
Plus$20/moYes — “advanced reasoning models with GPT-6 Astra and GPT-5.6”
Profrom $100 or $200Yes — Astra + Pro reasoning on Astra; 5× or 20× usage vs Plus
Business / Enterpriseper-seat (credits extra)Astra post: Enterprise off until an admin enables it

API is extra: gpt-6-astra $10 / $50 per 1M (Standard). Copilot Astra is a GitHub bill, not ChatGPT Free.

Same pattern at the other labs

LabFree / cheapPaid gets
GoogleGemini app still exists without Pro/Ultra3.8 Flash consumer copy: Google AI Pro and Ultra. Flash Cyber is a defender program, not the free app.
AnthropicClaude.ai Free / Pro $20Fable 5.1 included quota is Max and up. Help Center: Max 5x $100 / Max 20x $200 (Max plan). Included Fable = ≤50% of weekly usage, same bucket as other models. Pro: Fable is credits, not the $20 limit. Mythos 5.1 is trusted access.
xAILimited Grok on XFlagship text model is Grok 4.6. API from docs.x.ai: $2 in / $6 out per 1M (<200k prompt); doubles at ≥200k. Fast variant 2×. Consumer SuperGrok HTML 403’d — use in-app pricing.

Local models (Ollama, llama.cpp) are the honest free path: you pay in VRAM and time, not a seat. They will not match Astra’s published computer-use numbers.

When free is honest

  • You are evaluating whether you even want an assistant.
  • Throwaway questions, no repo, no production agent.
  • You will run weights locally and accept the quality ceiling.

When you should already be paying

  • Daily coding / agent loops (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, Copilot).
  • Computer-use or long multi-step work (the thing Astra and Fable 5.1 were sold on).
  • You hit weekly caps and start a new chat to “reset” the model. That is you rationing a free quota.
  • You need the expensive SKU of a frontier model: ChatGPT Astra Pro (Pro/Business/Enterprise), Claude Fable included (Max $100+, not Pro $20), Gemini Ultra / Google AI Pro.

Dollar amounts on Plus vs Pro change. Read the in-product plan page. The shape does not: frontier id on a paid row, previous-gen or flash on free.
